WordCamp 2025: AI + the future of resilient interfaces

Last month, I had the honor of speaking at WordCamp US 2025 in Portland, where I presented a session on building resilient interfaces through fluid and intrinsic design.

Fluid design principles empower teams to create websites that are elegant, adaptable, and easier to manage—while reducing code complexity. The goal is to deliver interfaces that not only look great but also stand up to the evolving demands of content management teams.

WordPress + AI

One of the most exciting conversations at WordCamp was around the intersection of WordPress and artificial intelligence.

The WordPress core AI team is blazing a path forward by advancing on two fronts:

  • Abilities API – a platform to expose functionality for AI clients (and beyond).
  • MCP Adapter Plugin – enabling rapid iteration outside of core while keeping stability in place.

This dual-path approach allows WordPress to move fast in adapting to evolving AI standards, while giving developers the reliability they need.

The future of search

Google’s Danny Sullivan shared thought-provoking insights into how search is evolving in the age of AI. With Google’s new AI-driven “fan-out” model, complex long-tail queries are broken into related components. This gives users a broader range of results, helping them gain context faster and dive deeper where it matters.

Why this matters:

  • Users are exploring a wider variety of websites.
  • Engagement is higher once people click through.
  • SEO strategy needs to adapt—fast.

The takeaway? Good SEO is really Good GEO (or AEO / LLMSEO / AIEO / whatever we call it next). Don’t chase the algorithm. Instead, focus on creating unique, valuable content and delivering a great page experience.

Fun facts from the conference

  • 15% of searches every day are brand-new queries that have never been searched before.
  • In 2023 alone, Google launched more than 4,700 algorithm updates.
  • Traffic to wordpress.org is up almost 20% in the past year.

WordCamp US 2025 was an inspiring reminder that our digital landscape is shifting faster than ever—driven by AI, evolving search behavior, and new design paradigms. For teams building on WordPress, the message is clear: design for adaptability, create for people, and stay resilient.
